Top 19 Best Free Download Managers

Best Free Download Manangers

Let's take a look at 19 best free download managers of 2016.

Everybody wants to use a download manager, but not all of them are ready to "buy" the software, probably because they don't have the money, or they don't want to spend money on softwares.

There are a lot of free download managers out there, but finding good quality freeware is a time-consuming process. Anyway, I did the work, and then found 20 free download managers that you can rely on.

Here they are...

  • Free Download Manager

Free Download Manager Logo

Free Download Manager is an open-source download manager with a modern user interface and a lot of features such as BitTorrent support, download acceleration, smart file management, proxy support and etc. This program accelerates the file acquisition by breaking the file into smaller pieces and then downloading them simultaneously.

FDM can also resume broken downloads, download flash videos, and schedule downloads. It also allows you to set download and upload limits to surf the web without any lag during downloads.

  • Xtream Download Manager

Xtream Download Manager Logo

Xtream Download Manager is like a small version of the Internet Download Manager. It can save streaming videos, resume broken downloads, limit upload/download speed, and schedule downloads.

XDM uses sophisticated dynamic segmentation algorithm, data compression, and connection reuse to speed up the download process. It also supports almost all the modern web browsers.

  • Internet Download Accelerator

The user interface of this program is very user-friendly and is a lot similar to the old version of IDM (Internet Download Manager). If you don't like the current skin, you can change it by going to View > Skins. You also can get 6 nice looking skins from the official website for free.

The Internet Download Accelerator has a lot of features, such as the ability to schedule download jobs, show the contents of ZIP archives before download, download only the selected files from an archive, check MD5 sum of downloaded files, play streaming audio and video files while they are being downloaded, and resume broken downloads. It is also equipped with advanced sorting options.

With this tool, you can also download videos and audios from any site. It can even detect and use your browser's proxy server settings.

  • GetGo Download Manager

GetGo Download Manager Logo

It's free and super efficient, but I don't like it's user interface and some so called extra features. GetGo has an integrated web browser (GetGo123), that is crap, I don't know from where they get these stupid ideas. The browser is based on Internet Explorer 8, and it is super buggy. So if you are going to use the GetGo download manager, please don't use the integrated browser.

It allows you to resume and schedule downloads, download web videos, and it also allows you to integrate virus protection on download completion. GetGo only supports internet explorer and firefox, that's not good because nowadays people use a variety of web browsers.

  • FlashGet Download Manager

FlashGet Download Manager Logo

Like most of the download managers, FlashGet can also call anti-virus automatically to clean malicious programs after the download. It supports HTTP, FTP, MMS, RTSP, and many other protocols. But unfortunately, FlashGet doesn't support HTTPS.

You can download torrent files using this program, but it is not as powerful as modern BitTorrent clients. According to the official website, FlashGet doesn't consume too much system resources, I put this to test and found that they are absolutely right.

  • EagleGet Download Manager

EagleGet Logo

EagleGet has a cool flat user-interface, I like it, but it is not well designed actually. This freeware has a unique function called "Silent Mode" that can temporarily turn off all notifications, this feature  is pretty useful when you are playing a game or something.

It also has an automatic malware checker and a file integrity verifier. And, it can also auto-update download URLs without re-starting from the beginning.

Since it automatically detects media content on any web page, you can download pretty much any streaming media from any site.

  • Ninja Internet Download Manager

Ninja Internet Download Manager Logo

Ninja Internet Download Manager is wonderful download manager with a lot of features. It can resume downloads, download video and audio files from popular media websites, convert media downloads from one file format to another, extract audio from video automatically, schedule downloads, limit download speed, update expired download URLs, and more.

NIDM also has the ability to delete the downloaded files beyond recovery. The file shredder in this program can actually shred both the data and the meta-data, meaning the files can never be recovered, even by using powerful forensic tools.

This program always monitors your clipboard, so to add a download, all you have to do is right-click and copy the link or you can drag and drop the link onto the Ninja Download Manager window.

It also got proxy support, a virus scanner, and a password manager.

  • uGet

uGet Logo

uGet is an open source multi-platform download manager that supports many protocols including the BitTorrent. Like most of the modern download managers, it can resume broken downloads, download as many files as you want simultaneously, and do many other things.

It allows up to 16 simultaneous connections per download, and it uses Adaptive Segment Management to ensure optimal download speeds at all times (when one segment drops out then the other connections pick up the slack).

With this app, you can specify how many downloads each category is allowed to run simultaneously.

  • Download Accelerator Plus Free

DAP is a powerful download manager from Speedbit. It has many useful features, what I personally found interesting is that a feature called "Automatic Mirror Speed Boost" which ensures that you always get the best download speed from the fastest download sources. DAP does this magic by automatically switching the connections to a faster mirror site.

It can also download online videos, convert videos to MP3, and pause and resume downloads. DAP has an integrated internet browser, which I think is a bad feature for a download manager.

It also allows you to play the video and audio files as they are being downloaded.

  • JDownloader

JDownloader is an open source download manager that can do a lot of things like any other download manager on this list. It can limit bandwidth, auto-extract archives, store login credentials, schedule downloads, and etc.

  • Microsoft Download Manager

Microsoft Download Manager is a simple download manager, and it is extremely easy to use. It supports proxy and allows up to 16 connections per download. That's all I can say about this program!

  • BitComet

BitComent is a powerful download manager that supports HTTP, FTP, and BitTorrent. Since the BitTorrent technology is integrated into HTTP/FTP download in this program, your download speed will be much better.  During the download, the BitComet automatically switches the connection to  fastest download sources.

It also allows you to preview video files during the download process. This freeware also has the ability to scan the downloaded files for malware.

  • GetRight

Like BitComet and DAP, GetRight can also search for mirrors for the file you are downloading. It also offers features like scheduling and Integrated browser.

GetRight can automatically download podcasts for you, all you have to do is subscribe to your favorite channels.

  • TotalD Free

  • Download Accelerator Manager

Download Accelerator Manager dynamically segments download throughout the download process, reuses connections without extra connect steps, and maintains connections busyness. Most importantly, it eliminates the time-wasting file-part-assembly process to save your time on all downloads.

It also offers a tool called "MediaGrabber" that allows you to download video/audio from any web page. And, this tool can grab media files from any internet software.

  • iGetter

iGetter Logo

iGetter is a full featured download manager that can resume broken downloads, monitor clipboard for links, create and set download rules, schedule downloads, increase the download speed using mirror sources, show you the contents of compressed files before downloading them and do many other useful things.

It supports HTTP and FTP protocols as well as HTTPS and FTP over SSL.

  • Fresh Download

Fresh Download is an easy-to-use download manager that supports FTP, HTTP and HTTPS protocols. Unlike many other download managers, it only allows up to 8 connections for a file. But it can help you to schedule your downloads, scan the downloaded file for viruses, extract the Zip file and more.

It supports almost all the modern browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Chrome,  and Opera.

  • Turbo Download Manager
